As a huge Timonen fan he is my first pick for a captain. My reasons are that he is a veteran player, having played in Finland for nearly a decade before signing with The Nashville Predators and then being acquired by The Flyers in 2007. Timonen to my knowledge is still going to be playing for the Flyers in this upcoming season. I have been hearing some rumors that he may be retiring once his two year contract is up, but when researching this I could not find anything about his retirement. He was also an alternative captain for this past season, so naturally I think he already has the experience dealing with referees and the media. Timonen is one of the older players on the team, but I think that could help him as captain since his experience in the game can help him to advise his younger team mates. Also, Timonen is wise enough not to get too many PIMs. He is not a fighter, which is good to have in both a defenseman and a team captain.
Chris Pronger may be a controversial player, but he seems like the natural choice for captain. At least in the eyes of many Flyers fans. Like Timonen, Pronger is also an older player which I think benefits his team mates, as they can learn from his experience as a hockey player. I only have two concerns in regards to Pronger as captain. One is his health. Pronger was out for the beginning of last season and then towards the end. As a leading scorer, we can only hope that he has a healthier season than last. If he was awarded captain his health would be an issue, since the alternative captains would have to take over for him when he could not play a game. The other issue I have is that Pronger hates the media. I have to admit that he does mess with the media a lot, and if you watch him being interviewed you can tell that he does not want to be bothered. The team captain has to be present for a lot of press conferences and needs to be a good representation for the team towards the media.
The right winger has been in the spotlight more recently lately, and I feel like I have seen his growth as a player in the past two seasons. Briere has been a Flyer since 2007, and in the past two seasons he has gained a strong following by the fans. Flyers fans like a player that can score, and Briere has been doing a lot of scoring for us in this way. Briere even played in The NHL all-star game, a sign that the league is recognizing his talent in the game. Briere is currently leading the flyers with 68 points, but he comes second to Carter with 34 goals and 246 shots on goals, while his shooting accuracy is 13.8. Second only to Claude Giroux. I think with Briere's talent he could have the potential to be a great captain for The Flyers. I proudly wear his name on the back of my shirt.
Giroux is also becoming a fan favorite in Philly, especially after it was his shootout goal against the rangers that allowed the team to enter the playoff season in the 2009-2010 season. From then on his playing has been impressing me. Giroux played opposite Briere in the all star game, but these two play well together on the ice as Flyers. Giroux may have less goals scored than Briere at 25, but his shooting accuracy is 14.8, second only to Ville Leino. Giroux is still a younger player, so I think maybe the captain should be a little more of an experienced player, but Richards was also young when he took on the captaincy so anything could happen.
I guess we just have to keep waiting for what the flyers decide to do about acquiring a new captain. Let's hope the flyers shake up benefits the team come October.
LET'S GO FLYERS!
